Crime was up this week in our area of the city, with 46 significant crimes reported within a two-mile radius of Topanga Canyon and Ventura boulevards.

We were sad to report this week Emmy Award-winning news and sportscaster Mario Machado of West Hills died. Machado was also a founder of AYSO. He was 78.

Police officers shot a prowler early May 5 on Woodlake Avenue just north of Sherman way in Canoga Park. Read about it here.

A task force including officers from the Los Angeles Police Department's Topanga station investigated and arrested I.D. theft suspects for various crimes.

Firefighters were also busy, putting out two area fires. They knocked one fire near the intersection of Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Mulholland Drive down in less than an hour. Two firefighters suffered injuries at , near the intersection of Sadring Avenue.
