Driver in Critical Condition After Smashing Into Power Pole on Winnetka

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

UPDATE 11:29 p.m.

An approximately 25-year-old man is in critical condition after a crash in the 6000 block of Winnetka Avenue in Woodland Hills just before 7 p.m. Saturday, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Firefighters pulled the man from wreckage after his vehicle collided with a power pole. He was taken to a nearby trauma center. The cause of the crash was under investigation.

The crash caused a small blackout on Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power's Twitter page. The power also reportedly went out at nearby Pierce College's John Shepherd Stadium, according to several readers that commented on this story.

The outage caused the cancellation of Pierce's football game against visiting Moorpark College, according to the Ventura County Star. The power is expected to be out at the field until Sunday, according to the report, and the game has been moved to Monday.

Is that why there is currently a blackout across Ventura Blvd. in Woodland Hills?

I'm not sure yet Michelle but it is very possible. However, I was at the scene of the crash not long ago and the power was not out in the immediate area. The street lights one block in both direction were still working and it did not appear that any power lines had been snapped or that the power pole had been structurally compromised.

A Sheriff car came onto the field at Pierce and said that's why the power was out - due to the crash.

I was jogging on the hill at Pierce and saw all of the lights in the stadium (where a game was to be played) go off along with the sound system. This was followed immediately by what sounded like a very loud circuit breaker snapping off. About ten minutes later, I drove by the accident. Paramedics were just arriving. I've been wondering if there is a connection.
As to the power-out at Ralph's, Pavilions was also dark. AND, as I drove by Chase Bank (in the Ralph's parking lot,) I saw a pair of uniformed officers with drawn weapons, one of which was a shotgun. They were cautiously moving around the corner of the bank. Apparently, a lot is going on.

Thank you Jennifer, I guess that answers the question. What event was happening on the field? Was the power out all over campus?

This is regarding the blackout at Pierce, attributed to the accident on Winnetka.

Thank you, Don, this is very helpful. I'm going to update the story with this information.

@Don, the blackout at Pierce did not attribute to the accident, the accident caused the lights to go out because a car slammed into the light post at a very high speed.
