'Laughter' Opens Tonight at Pierce College

The play runs through March 31.

Funny things are going on at Pierce College tonight. The theater department's production of Neil Simon's Laughter on the 23rd Floor, about comedy writers, opens tonight.

The play was inspired by Simon's experience as a writer on Your Show of Shows, where he worked alongside Mel Brooks, Carl Reiner and Woody Allen. The play tells the story of oddball characters who write for a comedy show and the Sid Ceasar-like star who goes to bat for his creative team.

The play chronicles the writing room's antics and its increasing stress levels under the pressures of rising McCarthyism and television execs who think their audience won't understand the writers' sophisticated humor.
