Two Woodland Hills High Schools Head to State Academic Decathlon

The 35th annual California Academic Decathlon begins today in Sacramento with 25 teams from Los Angeles County, including two with Woodland Hills students: Taft and El Camino Real charter high schools.  

The highest scorer in qualifying competition from Los Angeles was Marshall High School. 

The competitors will take tests in art, science, economics, music, social science, language and literature and mathematics today. The decathlon will conclude tomorrow with the speech and interview portions and the super quiz.

Results will be announced Sunday. The winner will advance to compete against other state winners at the national championship, which will be held April 24-26 in Honolulu.

Marshall won the Los Angeles Unified School District Academic Decathlon held Jan. 25 and Feb. 1 with 55,785.7 points out of a possible 65,400. Three- time defending national champion Granada Hills Charter was second with 55,728.4.

The other LAUSD schools joining Marshall and Granada Hills in the state decathlon are Franklin; Garfield; Bell; Hamilton; Narbonne; Van Nuys; Grant and North Hollywood.

Mark Keppel High School of Alhambra won the Los Angeles County Office of Education's Academic Decathlon with 11 other schools qualifying for the state competition -- South Pasadena; Redondo Union; Beverly Hills; West High of Torrance; South High of Torrance; Alhambra; Edgewood; Torrance; Burbank; El Rancho; and West Ranch.

Bishop Alemany of Mission Hills won the Southern California private school decathlon to qualify for the state competition.
